Best Valentine's present ever!! Concert tix to The Specials (original lineup!)

Oh, me oh my! I am so excited today because my of my best friends got me a ticket to see The Specials live in concert in NYC!!! SKA was the beginning to many of my romances with music, people, and my home of 10 yrs New York City.

Before I moved to the city I lived in CT where I would sneak off to SKA shows in New Haven, University of Hartford, upstate NY, New York City, and Pearl Street in Northampton. I was a big fan of local CT bands like Nigel Six and Johnny Too Bad and the Strikeouts.

I remember dressing up in wing tip shoes or docs, tight pants, Fred Perry shirts, and maybe a paperboy hat to top it off. Back then, I had fire engine red hair cut in little bob with babydoll bangs! My favorite NYC SKA band at the time was Metro Stylee...I prolly listened to their demo tape hundreds of times driving around in my car during High School.

Oh SKA how I love you...I've never forgotten and never will.

Puerto Rican garage rock firing it up in Brooklyn - Davila 666!

Davila 666 are my #1 favorite garage rock n' rollers from Puerto Rico...I love them like a hardcore skinhead loves a good punch in the face! They have great songs, they have awesome live shows, and these boys are just all around nice boys w/ a heart for rock n' roll. They will be performing at the SCION GARAGE SHOW @ the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Thurs, Feb 25th (with the DIRTBOMBS). Make sure to RSVP for free entry!

Describing themselves as like "Menudo on drugs," San Juan, Puerto Rico's Davila 666 combine Stooges-like garage rock fire with the occasional sugary pop melody. The seven -- not six, surprisingly -- Davilas include singer/tambourine player Sir Charles, multi-instrumentalist AJ, guitarists/vocalists Miss Davila and Johnny Otis, drummer/guitarist/vocalist San Pablo, percussionist/vocalist Panda, and guitarist/drummer/vocalist Gigi.

Their theatrical live show -- which includes themes, props, costumes, and dancers -- won them fans in the States when they toured with the Black Lips and the King Khan & BBQ Show. Davila 666's self-titled U.S. debut was released in summer 2008 via In the Red Records. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide (Content provided by All Music Guide Copyright © 2008 All Media Guide, LLC)

I wrote a song w/ Les Handclaps from Montreal "Barbarella Pop Club"

Yup, I wrote a song back in 2007 for one of my favorite bands from Montreal LES HANDCLAPS and it's finally out! The song is called Barbarella Club (after the rock n' roll party in Madrid). I've NEVER written lyrics for a song, nor written any music EVER, so I'm very flattered that they included it on their latest album "Ouh Ouh Ah!". It's a silly, bubblegum song, but I like it:)

Les Handclaps, semi-finalists in the 2008 edition of the Montreal industry showcase Francouvertes, proudly present their debut album, “Ouh Ouh Ah!” The band’s objective is clear—they’re going to make you dance, and dance hard, to the sounds of their electro-pop-yéyé sung in French, English, Spanish and German—hits charged with the wild teen energy of ‘60s garage rock, refined to laser precision with new-wave electronics. Daniel Saucier and Hugo Clermont have DJed numerous popular French music events in the States, including Le One Night Stand in NYC. Team these guys up with Montreal underground icon and globetrotting ex-Kingpin Lorraine Muller, voted “Best Live Performer” at the MIMI Awards, and you get a creative force without equal. On stage, they’re accompanied by Marie Béland and Marilyne St-Sauveur, established dancers on Montreal’s contemporary scene, who add their own unique twist to the classic gogo style.

Many renowned collaborators appear on the album, including Stuart Zender (Jamiroquai), Kim Ho (Creature), Orion “Re-Evolution” Curiel (Shades of Culture), Sunny Duval (Les Breastfeeders), and ME (Amylulita)! They asked me to write the song in Spanish so I was definitely nervous, but totally excited for the opportunity.

You can listen to Barbarella Pop Club on legalsounds.com
Inspiration: My experience living, partying, and having fun with friends when I lived in Madrid, Spain.
Story behind the lyrics: I'm writing a letter to a friend in New York about my first night out in Spain. I was so excited that I couldn't wait to tell her so I'm write her when I got home from the club at 8am.

Watch out NOSSA is back!! Free baile funk for grabs...

nossamusic.com "NOSSA WAS ORIGINALLY STARTED BACK IN 2005 IN NYC BY 3 FRIENDS AS A BRAND/LABEL CONCEPT TO CONNECT BRAZIL TO THE REST OF THE WORLD THROUGH MUSIC, CLOTHING, AND PARTIES. TODAY, STILL RAN BY DJ/PRODUCER KASSIANO, NOSSA MUSIC CONTINUES TO BE AN OUTLET AIMING AT BRINGING YOU GOOD DANCE MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD."

I bought my first NOSSA compilation back in 2006 at a botuique in the Lower East Side and totally fell in love w/ baile funk beats. The track called "Ai Você Gosta" by Zuzuka Poderoza (previously known as AZU), seriously struck a sweet spot and to this day I still play it at Nacotheque parties.

Nacotheque had the privilege to party with Dj Sujinho at a special party we hosted during LAMC '07 and then a couple years later Zuzuka Poderoza performed live at Nacotheque. Needless to say I was very happy!

Because of this discovery I began my adventure in finding more baile funk and came upon groups like Bonde Do Role, Todosantos, Bonde James Bonde, Bonde Da Pedale, Madame Mim, Plastic Caramelo, IsaGT, Edu K, and many more. Thank you NOSSA for opening my heart to more musica!

And now here is some valuable music you can grab for free courtesy of NOSSA!! Recent tracks, mixes, xclusivs, remixes, and bootlegs...

New Video: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Skeletons

Quoted from BUST "With the release of It's Blitz in 2009, the New York City trio presented fans with something a bit different from their previous guitar-driven garage sound; an album full of synth, glitter, and sweaty dance-all-night tracks.

In the video for "Skeletons", we see a somewhat softer, slightly spooky side of the band: ghostly images of cemeteries, monochromatic visuals, and Victorian-era meets Elvira garb. Karen O explains, "the Yeah Yeah Yeahs wrote this song in a barn in Massachusetts in December '07 during a snow storm. It has a very wintry feeling to it. It's atmospheric, melancholy, and unlike any song we've ever written before."

SKELETONS LYRICS
Love my name
Love left dry
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Skeleton me
Skeleton me

Soon comes rain
Dry your eyes
Frost or flame
Skeleton me
Fall asleep
Spin the sky
Skeleton me
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Love, don't cry
Skeleton me
Skeleton me
Skeleton

Personally, I think the Skeletons video is visually similar to the 2003 movie The Saddest Music in the World. Both very beautiful...

BANDA DE TURISTAS
Argentine garage rockers Banda de Turistas were recipients of the “LAMC Artist Discovery Award” at last year’s 10th Annual Latin Alternative Music Conference in New York City. Forming at the young age of 18, the retro rock group soon caught the ear of local rock icon Babasonicos frontman, Adrian Dargelos, and the vocalist praised them as one of his favorite new acts. Pulp’s legendary vocalist, Jarvis Cocker, even expressed his support for the band before they released their debut EP, asking them to open several shows in Buenos Aires. Rolling Stone Argentina hailed the group as 2008’s “Best New Artist” and MTV Latin America named Banda de Turistas as one of South America’s “Best Artists” of the year.
