I'm a big fan of Tom Tom Club's hit singles 'Genius Of Love' and 'Wordy Rappinghood' so I was super exciting to find they are releasing their new album 'Genius of Live' on Feb 7th w/ a special remix by Señor Coconut!

The two-disc package will feature select tracks from their 'Live at The Clubhouse' album and new remixes of their timeless single, 'Genius Of Love'.'Live at The Clubhouse' documented the iconic group performing in front of close friends at their home studio. The band can be heard playing their hit singles 'Genius Of Love' and 'Wordy Rappinghood' as well as signature covers of Al Green's 'Take Me To The River' And Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing'. The performance was recorded shortly after the September 11th tragedy, converting the stress and paranoia of the times into positive energy.

Tom Tom Club was formed by Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth in 1981. Graduates from the Rhode Island School of Design, they moved to New York City where they founded the Talking Heads as a trio with David Byrne in 1975. In early 1981, the Talking Heads took a hiatus after five years of touring internationally and four studio albums. Chris and Tina began the Tom Tom Club and signed with Chris Blackwell and Island Records.

"Genius Of Love" has been sampled since the early days of Hip Hop by a wide variety of artists including, Grandmaster Flash, Mariah Carey, Tupac Shakur and T.I. The second disc on this release features prominent Latin alternative artists like Ozomatli, Money Mark, Senor Coconut and The Pinker Tonestackling the track.

I was fortunate enough to meet ARI UP (AKA Ariane Forster -TheSlits/Madussa/TrueWarriors) last year The Slits played a reunion show @ Webster Hall. My good friend Maria Blueghost took me to see them saying "you gotta meet Ari" she's such a sweetheart! And she was :)

On October 16, 2010 ARI UP passed away due to a serious illness at the age of 48.

In honor of the memory of the legendary Ari Up a/k/a Ariane Forster, lead singer of the pioneering girl punk band the Slits, True Warriors and more, Dunia Best and Aram Sinnreich (Brave New Girl, Agent 99), the Punk Professor Vivien Goldman, Joly McFie of Punkcast.com and friends are throwing a PUNKY REGGAE PARTY on January 16, 2011 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.

Disgraceland Hook Squad terrible car crash! Please donate

back in July of 2010, a terrible car accident severely injured several members our friends in the Disgraceland Hook Squad. Thankfully Robby, Brandon and Jill have all recovered. However Arwen “Spliff” Rosa, the father of Disgraceland is still in need of constant medical care and rehabilitation.

Spliff and Disgraceland have always been there to work with us on the live shows with the NYC Zombie Crawl as well many other amazing events. Spliff has done so much for the suspension and sideshow communities over the years and he needs our help now more than ever! Below is info on the situation as well as updates as of January 1st 2011; even if you can donate $10 every little bit helps! Spliff’s wife Jill is about 8 weeks away from having their baby on top of all this and they need to get back to NYC, we need to raise $20,000 ASAP!!

On their way from Texas to California, Arwen Rosa and his wife Jill were involved in a very serious car accident. Arwen was rendered unconscious and was airlifted to a hospital. Robby was also airlifted to the same hospital, with a collapsed lung. Jill, who is pregnant with their child, has recovered, however Arwen is still in need of constant medical care and rehabilitation.

From Jill – “His brain is functioning very well. He knows who we are and what we do. He remembers all of our friends, family, places we’ve been… Of course every now and then we still notice glitches. After all he did sustain a traumatic brain injury. He still doesn’t have much of a voice due to his tracheotomy, but we do communicate pretty well. As far as movement, he’s recently been moving his right arm. Not his fingers yet, but shoulder, elbow and wrist. He’s able to raise his arm enough to adjust his glasses on his nose. All of this is great news. Now for not so great. Arwen’s immune system is not working well. Right now he is in ICU with pneumonia for the 3rd time in 4 months. He’s had a very high fever and his white blood cells aren’t able to fight the infection. On the 28th he got a blood transfusion to help.”

Also, soon Jill will be caring for her husband and their new born baby, Odessa. She is due Early Spring 2011. Because of this, it is imperative that she and Arwen move back home to New York. (The two of them have been in Odessa and then Lubbock in Texas since the wreck happened while in route from Houston to California). Although they have been fortunate to have many visitors and financial support, it just wont be enough once their baby is born. Back in New York they both have family and a large support system.

From Jill – “Arwen is not getting the care he needs out here and there’s only a couple people who can physically help us. In New York we’ve got family, support system, lots of resources, everything we need. Not to mention our Baby girl is due in about 8 weeks! I have been trying to look into medical foundations and charities so far with no luck. Please help if you can.”

Because Arwen’s condition is still so severe, the only way to transport him home is by medical air transportation. Yes, this endeavor is huge and expensive. With all the care he needs the trip will cost $20,000 and need to be arranged quickly. Once the call comes in to say the bed is available they will only have 96 hours to make it from Odessa to New York. The costs do not end there, as medical care extends beyond transportation.

The "Best of Bootie 2010" mix is pretty much the soundtrack to Bootie, crammed into a nearly 80-minute mix -- from the early-in-the night ramp-up to the prime-time dancefloor bangers to the last-call drunken kookiness to the end-of-the-night sentimental slow jams, this is what a real mashup party sounds like.

I first experienced BOOTIE at 2005 or 2006 NYE's party in San Fran. I was blown away w/ the mash ups and the posters on the walls of "mashed up" artists faces. I ran up to BOOTIE Djs Adrian & Mysterious D like a little kid in a candy store. Big smile on my face and introduced myself. We kept in contact and I invited them to DJ in NYC. Ever since they've built a NYC fanbase and today have a full blown BOOTIE NYC party established.

BOOTIE is all about the love for music, art, costumes, having fun, being smart, creativity, and proving to the world that you can be different and it's alright :) My love for BOOTIE stands strong. Love you A&D!!

2010 was a very interesting year with lots of fun to be had. Just a quick overview of my year...

Mezclasonic tour w/ Camilo Lara (M.I.S.), Marcelo, Javier Romero, and the kids of D'Marquesina. The tour lasted a whole year bringing us to Chicago, Miami, NY, and LA. We had a lot of fun!

PARKED and Oktoberfest @ Governors Island w/ MeanRed Productions in Sept and Oct. These two massive events had thousands in attendance and a whole lot of organized chaos. I had a blast working on these projects even though it took a week to recover from each of these large scale events!

Remezcla Musica launch party @ Broadway East. This was an amazing production w/ Remezcla.com and some of the best up and coming Latin alternative performers. Nina Dioz, Zuzuka Poderosa, Sunsplash, and some great Djs as well. I wanted this production to go extra well and I think everyone was very happy.

CMJ Blood n' Bones international showcase @ Fontana's. This was a personal project I created during CMJ and it turned out to be a great success! The line up was a melting pot of international bands Hard Nips from Japan, Outernational from NY, R-Tronika from all over, and Les Handclaps from Montreal. I got to even sing the song "Barbarella Pop Club" I wrote in Spanish w/ Les Handclaps!!

There are so many other awesome projects and events I worked on this past year that I can't even list them all, but I'd like to say THANK YOU to everyone!!

I welcome 2011 with open arms and look forward to many more awesome things to come. I'm ringing in my new year with MeanRed Productions and The Rub @ Public Assembly. Should be a grand fiesta w/ lots of dancing and craziness....

I've been following the lovely powerpop princesa from Argentina Denise Murz for at least two years now. She's collaborated w/ a favorite of mine; the famous travesti La Prohibida from Spain. Her tracks are fun, sexy, and glitter w/ studio 54-style beats.

I included her song "Pretenciosa" in my Chula Pop Crush DJ mix a while back. You can hear more of her songs on her website and watch her new music video for the song "Cuánto?". In the 2008 Denise debuted her full ablum “Pretenciosa”.

I first discovered Zuzuka back in 2006 when I bought the Nossa Records compilation at Lower East Side store The Reed Space. I automatically fell in love w/ her song “Ai Voce Gosta” and have been following her music career ever since.

I'm happy I've been able to work w/ her on various events including Nacotheque, the Remezcla Musica launch party, and Que Bajo?!

She's a snazzy dresser, an energetic pixie w/ tons of life, an awesome live performer.

ZP grew up loving the raw Miami bass-inspired dance music Brazil calls funk and started throwing reggae and funk parties with members of the Nossa Crew when she moved to New York ten years ago. She tells her origin story in greater detail in this great video interview.

I haven't posted a blog in a while due to an amazing amount of months of awesome events, ridiculous amounts of travel, and hard work that I needed to sleep off. BUT, I'm back baby and it feels good!

I was a weird kid...Obama you think you coulda helped the taunting?

I was bullied and made fun of for being different all through grade school. It was the worst feeling in the world and I definitely suffered from all the taunting and poking fun mentally and physically for many years. Since moving to NYC at 17 I have since realized how awesome it is to be unique. If I could say one thing to the kids who harassed me almost everyday in school it would be "F*CK YOU, YOU F*CKNG FUCKS!! You didn't get the best of me!!!" Hopefully Obama's efforts w/ his "IT GETS BETTER" project will help some kids not have to go through the torture I did. Crossing fingers...

Their deaths are shocking and heartbreaking tragedies. No one should have to endure relentless harassment or tormenting. No one should ever feel so alone or desperate that they feel they have nowhere to turn. We each share a responsibility to protect our young people. And we also have an obligation to set an example of respect and kindness, regardless of our differences.

This is personal to me. When I was a young adult, I faced the jokes and taunting that too many of our youth face today, and I considered suicide as a way out. But I was fortunate. One of my co-workers recognized that I was hurting, and I soon confided in her. She cared enough to push me to seek help. She saved my life. I will always be grateful for her compassion and support – the same compassion and support that so many kids need today.

In the wake of these terrible tragedies, thousands of Americans have come together to share their stories of hope and encouragement for LGBT youth who are struggling as part of the It Gets Better Project. Their messages are simple: no matter how difficult or hopeless life may seem when you’re a young person who’s been tormented by your peers or feels like you don’t fit in: life will get better.

President Obama is committed to ending bullying, harassment and discrimination in all its forms in our schools and communities. That’s why he recorded this message.

Last year, the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services joined forces with four other departments to create a federal task force on bullying. In August 2010, the task force staged the first-ever National Bullying Summit, bringing together 150 top state, local, civic, and corporate leaders to begin mapping out a national plan to end bullying. The task force also launched a new website, www.bullyinginfo.org, which brings all the federal resources on bullying together in one place for the first time ever.

My 2010 Halloween Mix is ready to make you spooky!!

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I always love having an excuse to wear costumes...and glitter, eat candy, and listen to halloweeny songs!

Last year I created a Halloween mix w/ all music in Spanish just for fun and it was quite popular. I decided to make another one but I mixed it up w/ English and Spanish-sung music, some dance remixes of classics, and even a couple of horror movie sound clips:)

The mix is called "Amor y Sangre" and I think it's pretty entertaining. I hope you enjoy it and listen to it while you get all dolled up in your Halloween costume this year!

Thank you to Vogue Paris magazine for the promo image that inspired the name of this mix. I somehow find Love and Blood to go well together...like sex and chocolate?!? xoxo

SKA-P, the iconic ska-punk rock outfit from Madrid, Spain, will be playing a rare, one-night-only concert at New York's Irving Plaza on Saturday, November 11th. Tickets are $34.50 and are available at LiveNation.com.

Ska-P's songs feature an infectious and energic vibe, with the rockers mostly singing about non-conformity and individuality, criticizing capitalism and racism, and defending equal justice for all people. Throughout their career, Ska-P has backed up their words with actions, taking part in various multicultural, alternative and anti-globalization festivals and protests. After wildly successful tours throughout Europe and South America in the 90's and early 00's, Ska-P took a hiatus, much to the chagrin of their fans, to pursue side projects, and personal endeavors. Pudo pasar una hora, pero se les hizo como tres segundos, tres segundos para recordar, tres segundos para decir adiós a demasiadas cosas que habrían dado para hablar una vida entera, pero que se pronunciaron en un silencio que sólo admitía una mirada, una mirada de despedida, de agradecimiento y de dolorosa felicidad. En la mente de ambos imágenes del futuro, de un futuro que la lógica y el sentido común gritaban que no sería tal, ¿qué le iban a hacer? eran demasiado jóvenes como para saber cómo son las cosas, pero demasiado jóvenes como para no permitirse soñar.

Aquello era un adiós a las personas que habían sido al conocerse y compartir sus vidas ese breve espacio de tiempo, probablemente lo recordarían siempre, esos momentos ya tenían sus propias canciones que lo habían grabado todo mejor que cualquier foto.

Luego abrazos, lágrimas y un tímido "adiós" a dúo. Pero nada de aquello fue la auténtica despedida. Vino después, después de separarse definitivamente. The AIM Tell-A-Vision® Group (AIM TV) announced today the launch of “Punk Outlaw Records” as part of their “Punk Outlaw® Productions content banner. The digital record label will initially focus on 360 degree partnerships importing music from emerging punk & independent artists.

AIM TV Founder, Robert G. Rose, formed Punk Outlaw Records when traveling abroad gathering material for his documentary “Punktology…The Worldwide Influence of Punk”. Rose witnessed firsthand that the DIY (Do It Yourself) spirit of punk music was very much alive and thriving in places where artists sacrificed tremendously to make music in the face of incredibly challenging circumstances.

The new record label’s roster of recently signed artists include “Rudos Wild” (Rough and Wild), a raucous, in your face punk and punkabilly band from Montevideo, Uruguay that has been performing since 2003. It's days like this that remind me where my blood comes from and makes me proud. Even tho my skin is pale my veins carry spicy Mexican blood from my daddy; Guillermo Meneses (R.I.P.). The foto to the left is of my daddy (the handsome little boy in all white) celebrating his sisters bday in Mexico. The foto below that is of my daddy with his parents and his little sister who looks like a beautiful little Mexican doll!!

I remember sitting at my abuela's dinning room table in Mexico and contently eating sopa con sliced sausage. I was only 4yrs old but I can still remember walking through the market place and smelling freshly cooked street meat, roasted corn on the cob, and corn tortillas, MMMmmmm.

I used to dance in my parents living room to Mexican music and dancing in circles arm in arm with my baby brother (I really don't know what I was listening to, but I can guess it was mostly Nortenas). Hysterically laughing up a storm til my face turned red and my heart beat a million miles per hour.

Oh yes, Mexican runs through my veins and I'm proud of it! So tonight I'm happy to bring you the Nacotheque Mexican Independence party "Viva Mexico Cabrones"!!! I'm bringing spicy Mexican candies for everyone!!

The month of September has been an incredible adventure of awesome event production by yours truely. I ran my body empty through countless hours of sleepless nights and early wakeup calls.

I'm NOT complaining, but my body finally gave out. After friday night @ the Remezcla Musica launch party I woke up w/ a fever, stuffy nose, and a strong cough. Yuck! I hate being sickies.

Oh well, I guess it's time for watching movies in bed, drinking lots of water, catching up on lots of sleeeeeep, and listening to relaxing music. With that said I open my gmail to find a track sent to me by an indie pop artist from Puerto Rico ARDNAXELA. The track is called "Pelicula" and it's quick lovely along with the rest of a bunch more songs you can preview on her msypace.

Alexandra Rosa, better known as her alter ego ARDNAXELA, is a Mexico City-based singer/songwriter hailing from San Juan, Puerto Rico. After singing in several Indie-Pop bands, she went solo in 2005 and released the album 'Telecine De La Tarde Con Ardnaxela'.

Her musical influences range from Rocio Durcal, Burt Bacharach, Les Rita Mitsouko, The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees to The Pixies, exploring musical territories from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Spain. Ardnaxela will release her new EP 'Fantastidate' late 2010.

I love all sorts of fashion, music, scenes, hair styles, and shoes, but there are a few styles/scenes that I have a sweet spot for in my heart. One of those includes pin-up girls in blood, red lipstick, Betty Page black hair/Lucille Ball red hair/Marilyn Monroe blonde bombshells, pencil thin skirts, boobies, greasers, slicked back pompadours, tight blue jeans w/ a cuff, and white t-shirts w/ cigarette packs rolled up in the sleeve....oOoooohhh so hawt! Grrrrrrrrr. Um, did it just get hot or was it just me?

Anyways, I just wanted to share w/ you some fun fotos by Alexander Thompson for PAPER magazine - Scenes From the 10th Annual Kustom Kills & Hot Rod Thrills Car Show!

This past weekend marked the 10th Annual "Kustom Kills & Hot Rod Thrills" car show for the Rumblers Car Club NYC. This greasy annual hot rod fest, held under the B.Q.E. in Williamsburg, featured a vast array of pre-1964 American hot rods and kustoms -- cars with vintage customizing. The car show has grown immensely popular throughout the years, as people travel from all over the east coast to not only exhibit and see the amazing hot rods on display, but to drink beer, eat burgers and see bands. This year's musical highlights included King Sickabilly, Toothless George & His One-Man Band, Al & The Black Cats, and Those Hated Hearts. The best of the day, however, included the procession of cars peeling out of the parking lot at the end of the day, revving up their engines and burning rubber down Metropolitan. Long live The Rumblers!

Good morning mundo!! I went to sleep early in order to go to the beach today. I found myself waking up at 5am...too excited for fun in the sun? Sure:)

I woke up with a morning song in my head and remembered a Happy Morning mix I made back in December. The songs are guilty pleasures that make my heart feel warm and my mind at ease. It's kind of a toe tapper too, haha. (P.S. This mix is dedicated to my mommy; Karyn Louise Meneses. Te amo mamacita!)

Spanish Indie Pop group POLOCK set to Release U.S. Debut!

Europe has produced some of the world's most infectious English-language indie pop in recent years: Sweden's Shout Out Louds, France's Phoenix, Norway's Kings of Convenience. Upon first listen, one may think these bands are from Brooklyn... Silver Lake... Toronto.

In a similar tradition, Nacional Records introduces Polock, from Spain’s Mediterranean coastal city of Valencia (also where my last name comes from "Meneses"!). The group will release its U.S. debut album, ‘Getting Down From The Trees,’ on August 31st.

As one of Spain’s most important indie buzz acts, Polock has quickly become renowned for their contagious hooks and melodies. In the past year, Polock has played major stages like Europe’s premiere indie rock festival Primavera Sound as well as the MTV Winter Festival with Franz Ferdinand and Starsailor. Most recently, the top online video series La Blogotheque came to Spain to tape a “Take Away Show” with Polock on the beaches of Barcelona.

‘Getting Down From The Trees’ was recorded over two months in a Berlin studio after the group spent a year writing the album in Spain. “We thought it was time for a change of scenery,” says Papu Sebastián, Polock’s lead singer and primary songwriter.

Melodic, dream-gazers Zigmat are performing at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, Brooklyn tonight (10:30pm). I've been a fan since they performed at the Remezcla release party at Club 205 back in 2007 (i think)?

They have since changed their style a bit, dug deeper into their souls to find what really makes them tick, and are turning out to become a beautiful, electronic butterfly or series of glow bugs. Duno how else to explain, but I love it.

Electro-rock. Punky. International. Stylish. Bewitching. These are a few of the words that music critics have used to describe the Brooklyn band Zigmat. Fronted by vocalist Monica Rodriguez and bassist Stephen Yonkin, this ensemble manages to bring together an eclectic mix of world, punk, trip-hop and rock in a unique way that has won over critics and fans alike. Together for three years, the band has been signed by two labels (Ultra Records in Brazil and Actua Musica in Spain) and has performed in the US, Brazil, Mexico and will make their debut in Europe this Fall.

The band initially formed in 2006 when Rodriguez was searching for a bass player. Coincidentally, she and Yonkin had both attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston at the same time but never met until after they both graduated and settled in Brooklyn, New York. “We just met while hanging in a bar, and she said that she needed a bass player…and I was looking for a band,” recalls Yonkin. The two musicians spent the following year writing songs and collaborating on ideas that eventually turned into their first EP Sounds of Machines that they self-released in the US in July 2008. Brazilian label Ultra Records signed the band in 2008 and released a full-length by the same name in Brazil. The band was later joined by various musicians for touring in Mexico, Brazil and the US, and played several notable venues in New York City, including the Canal Room, Nublu and the Mercury Lounge. Zigmat has also performed for the LAMC and CMJ festivals in New York and the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.

In May of 2009, Zigmat released their debut full-length album in the US also entitled Sounds of Machines as well as their new music video “Machine”. The album consists of nine tracks, each showing a different aspect of Rodriguez’s vocal agility, which Billboard Magazine calls “the band’s secret weapon.” Four of the tracks deal with the pains, wants and frustrations of love: the album opens with the introspective, trippy ballad “Whisper” that describes longing and regret, then moves into the angry track “Decide” which tells the lover in both English and Spanish to “shut up!” “Light of the Moon” paints a dark picture of pseudo-sadistic lust while the track “So Sure” depicts an unrequited love. The band uses poetic lyrics in the tracks “Watch the World”, “Between Bullets” and “Fire”, each one displaying Rodriguez’s upper registers with a hushed and angelic quality. “Don’t Tire” is the album’s other Span-glish track, and “Machine” closes out the album with the band’s signature haunting, trip-hop riffs.

Billboard Magazine says about this new album, “the band's debut release blends cultures and enigmatic styles…[and it] kneads in a dash of rock and pop flair and has already inspired comparisons to such established trip-hop acts as Massive Attack, Air and Goldfrapp.” The Improper Magazine says, “the electronic sounds they make forged with [Rodriguez’s] out-of-the-world vocals and tantalizing effects make Zigmat one extremely arresting and sensual musical concoction.”

Zigmat’s music has been featured in the film “Backseat” (by Bruce van Dusen) and has garnered local television appearances in New York City (Hit Records Nightlife Videos) and Philadelphia (NBC’s The 10! Show) as well as national TV appearances on Fox’s Fearless Music TV and on SiTV. Radio appearances include Batanga Radio, KPFA in Los Angeles, and KCRW’s “The Morning Becomes Eclectic”. This year, Zigmat has signed with Spanish label Musica Actua and will tour Brazil and Europe this Fall.

Upon first glance, the guys of Telegrama look like Ivy League types. You know, the kind of guys who are bored of summering in the Hamptons because how passé, right? So, they decide to backpack through Eastern Europe after freshman year and then come back all bohemian-like, except you know they still send out their laundry and can’t prepare a meal more complex than a bowl of cereal. And this persona is exactly the one that Telegrama is playing up in their second album, the aptly-titled Country Club.

The blue-blood style trio, formed in Caracas in 2005, is (at least aesthetically) Latin America’s Vampire Weekend. In their golf-ready khakis and pastel polos, they cleverly pair tongue-in-cheek lyricism with even cheekier pop-punk instrumentation. Telegrama declares in “Jamas” that they will never change, no matter how hard anyone tries to change them. And you believe them in the way you believe your teenage sister, who is going through her rebellious phase.

In “Prisionero,” which samples the Los Prisioneros anthem “We Are Sudamerican Rockers,” we encounter the familiar narrative of Creative Person becoming Boring Person when they get a haircut and a suit and the dreaded first office job. This is slightly frightening, but the storytelling makes it mostly just hilarious.

This week is as much exciting as it is packed w/ lots of work to do. Sitting here making conference calls, sending emails, lining up various new projects and getting the last details for Friday's Nacotheque I find myself very calm and content. Listening to the sounds of Spanish indie electropop artist NITONIKO and everything feels fine. My heart is full of fluffy little clouds and happy thoughts...

Nitoniko's charming songs will most likely adhere to your brain and become part of your DNA. First in Mexico and now in Spain Nitoniko has published his first album "Selva De Mar". Full of hits as Los Chicos de Ahora, Mecanico Pop, Voy a Ponerme Guapo… including the cover song of the Spanish artist Massiel “Basta de Peleas”.

New York City has been hawt, hawt, hawt. The sun is blazing and you start sweating as soon as you step out your door. Yuck. What I wouldn't give for a swimming pool on my rooftop...now that would be sweeeeeet!

Today I present you w/ the next best thing to cooling off in this heatwave; my latest DJ mix titled "Amylulita's Nacotheque Summer Mix" (ya, I know it's not that creative, but it fits). This mix has a bit of everything that I think would be a great soundtrack for the beach or for hanging out by the pool. Okay, so let's see. Hawt Latina who plays drums for Psychobilly, Punk, and Metal bands in 5inch stiletto heels?? Now that's my kinda chavita.

In 4th grade I wanted to play drums and took lessons with a class of all boys. I stopped going because I got made fun of everyday and my teacher never paid attention to me. On my report card I got a D and a note to my mom that said "Maybe Amy should stick to instruments meant for girls". Wow, what a freaking douchebag...

Obviously drums are not meant only for guys and Lux can prove that to you in a heartbeat!

Lux was born on August 12, 1985 and at the age of twelve, she was taught how to play drums at a Latin music school she and her sisters attended. They learned to play Cumbias, Rancheras, and Balladas; Latin dance music.

By the age of 13, lux and her sisters were playing paid gigs at weddings and parties. For the next three years they continued to play Latin music until they were introduced to the song "Zombie" by The Cranberries... After being exposed to hard rock, there was no turning back. lux went on to teach herself to play hard rock while listening to bands such as The Cranberries, Van Halen, Megadeth, and Sonic Youth. During her sophomore year of high school, her brother brought home a Judas Priest album: Painkiller. lux was amazed at the incredible double bass speed and fast rolls, she bought a second bass drum and has been playing double bass ever since.

lux has achieved major credibility in the 12 years of her drumming career. She has thousands of loyal fans and is recognized in the male dominated metal, hard rock, and indie/punk experimental scenes. Her signature drumming combines heavy metal double-bass with complex rhythms and dynamics, all while playing in stilettos and it doesn’t stop there.

She also has the creative mind to incorporate elements of progressive and experimental rock rhythms. Music Connection Magazine describes her drumming as “…unique, off kilter, Keith Moon inspired drumming.” In November '07 she was awarded ‘Best Female Drummer’ in the Metal/Hard Rock category at the All Access Magazine Music Awards. In December '07 she was awarded ‘Outstanding Female Drummer of the Year’ by Rock City Magazine.

This young drum goddess has opened for Third Eye Blind, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, Reverend Horton Heat, Christian Death 1334, Chris Caffery, Doro, and Kamelot. She was on the 2006 Vans Warped Tour (which she received recognition for in the September ’06 issue of Drum! Magazine). In December 2006, lux was announced as 'Miss WFD 2007' for the World's Fastest Drummer competition at the NAMM Convention where lux amazingly set the record for Single Strokes in the Female Category at 901 Strokes in 1 minute. Shortly after, she was seen once again in Drum! and Modern Drummer magazines, April & May issues, for her record. In 2008 lux was seen on television on Sí TV's Jammin battle of the bands contest where after playing live in front of music mentor Dave Navarro (Janes Addiction), he commented "...I know a lot of guys who can't play like that." The show is still being aired as re-runs on MTV and Sí TV.

Lux is an official endorser of Paiste, Axis Percussion, Serial Drummer Clothing, run by drummer Franky Costanza, and has a full sponsorship with Too Fast Clothing. She is currently drumming for the well established psychobilly band Nekromantix and the thrash/death metal band Sacred Storm. Sacred Storm recorded a new EP titled Extreme Assault, now available on iTunes and CDBaby. Nekromantix recently returned from a nationwide tour with Rob Zombie this past Fall/Winter. The band is in the process of mixing their new album which will be released in 2010.

Referred to as “Manzanita” (“Little Apple”) by her Spanish friends and a rockin’ DJ by her American ones, Amylu Meneses, better known as Amylulita, is one of the co-founders of Nacotheque, a well-known alternative Latin music party, and Le One Night Stand, a hidden gem of the New York nightlife that has come and gone. Though she grew up in Connecticut, you’d never guess it from looking at her beautiful tattoos and bold hairstyles, and certainly not from her music collection, something in which she places a great amount of diligence and pride.

It was truly an honor to have her take time from her busy schedule promoting events, organizing parties, and making what seems like a 5 mixes a minute to sit down with me back in May to talk about what led her to DJing, her involvement in the NYC alt party scene, and her consciousness of global music.

I'm not totally pumped for the lineup this year, but I love Coney Island, live music, and fried dough w/ sugar so I'm heading to the Siren Music Festival 2010 tomorrow.

I've been going since it started in 20o1 and each year has been a bit more blah than the last, but it's always a great day for eye candy, carnival rides, boardwalk dancing, and getting into all sorts of trouble!

The Village Voice independently produces the Siren Music Festival. Set against the backdrop of Coney Island, this free, all ages, all day music festival showcases renowned and emerging artists on two outdoor stages.

Sylvia Ji's "Las Adelitas" exhibition, is finally at the Joshua Liner Gallery in NYC! Her dark and delectable darlings are so eerie and beautiful makes me want to cry.

Sylvia Ji is a master of capturing the dark side of the beautiful and the sublime. Macabre ‘Day Of The Dead’ catrinas intermingle with exotic empresses, with a regal elegance. Ji’s imagery is a visual elixir of life and death, combining sacred symbolism with mystical glamour and opulence. Influenced by historical costumery, Ji incorporates Baroque detailing such as luxurious tapestries, ornamental feathers, and gold leafing into her work for a more elaborate and decorative effect.

LAMC 2010 is coming to an end, but I'm having a blast this year! I'm exhausted from the week-long event but as the saying goes "I'll sleep when I'm dead." Born in 1907, July 6th in Coyoacan, Mexico, Frida Kahlo, is a well respected Mexican painter, a headstrong communist, a passionate lover, and a real fighter. She made the pain and suffering of her own disability the central subject of her paintings and expressed dark, disturbing thoughts with beauty and love. Many of her works are self-portraits telling good and bad stories of her life.

Frida was injured as a young girl in a bus accident and also survived the often deadly polio. She spent a lot of her girlhood alone in bed, stuck in a body cast which constricted movement from chest to waist. She used this time of solitude to draw, paint, and write poetry.

As a school girl, Frida encountered world renowned painter, Diego Rivera, who would change her life forever. Charmed right away by his off manner, passion, she fell in love with both Rivera and painting. One year later they were married.

According to Wikipedia, Kahlo's work was not widely recognized until decades after her death. It was not until the early 80s, when the artistic movement in Mexico known as Neomexicanismo began, that she became very prominent.

A few days before Frida Kahlo died on July 13, 1954, she wrote in her diary: "I hope the exit is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida".

Later, in his autobiography, Diego Rivera wrote that the day Kahlo died was the most tragic day of his life, adding that, too late, he had realized that the most wonderful part of his life had been his love for her.

Although Frida's health declined after 1940, her spirit has not. A series of photographs of Frida Kahlo, her life, and her painting is the subject of an exhibit sponsored by ARC in Whittier California, this summer. A total of 46 photographs will be on display.

Interesting tidbit...In 2007 Converse Shoes launched a limited edition of Frida Kahlo-themed sneakers. I want!

BERLIN FASHION WEEK w/ Spanish avant-garde designers potipoti!

Berlin Fashion Week is around the corner and one of my fav Spanish fashion designers rooted in Berlin potipoti have a special fashion video premiere. Wish I could be there!

For those of you in Berlin or people who have friends in Berlin, you should definitely go check this out. Just take a look at some of their work.

potipoti is a collaboration between two designers, Silvia Salvador and Nando Cornejo. Operating from Berlin(Germany) and Spain, potipoti creates fashion, graphic design, visual arts and product design.

The story of this duo begins in Salamanca, a university town in Northern Spain where both were graduating in Fine Arts. After working in Madrid as art directors for various studios, they moved to Berlin in 2001, which has been their home base ever since.

The studio-label potipoti was founded in 2005. Their distinctive aesthetic for graphics is reflected in their fashion designs. Collections have been shown in various exhibitions and catwalks around the world. They have worked in partnership with companies such as Mazda or General Optica, developing diverse projects like a complete collection of eye-wear as a result of the IV Contest of Upcoming Designer "Linea De".

So much to drool over ranging from Karl Lagerfeld silver headphones to Lady Gaga Heartbeat headphones and headphones inspired by Michael Jackson's Thriller to Swarovski Crystal Bose headphones: $409 worth of bling. Maybe not all these are comfortable nor afforable, but darn they are cool and unique.

I recently ordered a new style of DJ headphones that I've only seen European DJ friends use at clubs. From now on I'll be DJing with a 50's style, RED TELEPHONE RECEIVER!! Can't wait to get it in the mail in about another week.

Swarovski Crystal Bose Headphones

Michael Jackson "Thriller" Headphones

In other words, Thriller was ground-breaking! It was all about breaking records. Its legacy is undeniable and its influence can be heard in today’s rap, pop, rock, soul, funk, and hip hop. But the memory of Michael Jackson should not only live on through his music. The King of Pop can also be remembered in a pair of Thriller Headphones.

The Thriller Headphones were created before the untimely death of MJ. Obviously, this pair of headphone which won the Nokia headset competition in 2008 is different from any ordinary headphone because this one has a quirky “Thriller” concept.

Only one pair was made by Nokia into a working model though. I hope that MJ’s death inspires Nokia to produce at least a limited edition run of the “Thriller” Headphones.

Parra x David Burel Headphones
Finnish birch wooden headphones by Parra, a dutch underground street artist who storms through the design world much like Banksy, but with more colors and graphic designs. People go crazy over his work and scour the streets around Amsterdam to find a piece of Parra’s poster. This headphone is a collaboration project with The Perfect Unison, and it is made of birch wood. The pinnacle interest of this piece of art is in the construction where it plyed and molded just like how skateboards are made.

This headset takes the form of skate decks made of Finnish birch by David Burel. Having only a thickness if 1.2 mm allows the lightweight headphones proper flexibility with impeccable sound quality. €350 available here.

Lady Gaga Heartbeat Headphones
'Audio chic' seems to have got huge in the past year or so, with designer earphones and fashion cans cropping up everywhere. This distinctive-looking triangular set endorsed by Lady Gaga are pretty interesting.

Available in ruby red, black or chrome, they're high performance in-ear headphones, which deliver crystal clear sound. Even the little zip-up bag they come in is super chic, and would fit beautifully in your designer bag. €120 at Colette

Robot Rock Headset
Robot Rock headset by G Smith, inspired by Daft Punk track Robot Rock. These headsets also got position in the Nokia headset competition.

WeSC continues with their very popular collaboration headphone range. Their Bongo model will soon be released in collaboration with DimMak, Cassius, The Glimmers and the Blooody Beetroots. In terms of design you find anything from really colorful to more subtle black/white designs in the range. Look out for a release in July at Hanon

Hulger X Broken Hearts’ DJ Headphones
The team at hulger recently teamed up with the female DJ duo Broken Hearts to develop two-tone phone designed for mixing records. The phone plugs directly into the mixing unit and comes in two black and white colour combos.

Rad Art Work: Graffiti from Chile!

Seems that no matter what country you are in Graffiti it's either considered art, worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions or just plain vandalism, punishable by law.

I say to each his/her own so I believe a lot of Graffiti is definitely rad works of art specifically designed to be scene and heard.

My personal experience w/ Graffiti isn't at all something to brag about; consisting of a handful of movies like Beat Street, Wild Style, and Style Wars as well as my VERY short run of tagging adventures in NYC back in 2000 under the name "KILLAPINK"...haha.

Controversies still surround Graffiti after all these years creating disagreement amongst city officials/law enforcement and Graffitists looking to display their work in public locations.

According to Chile's English newspaper The Pulse this isn't so much the case in Valparaiso, one of Chile's World Heritage sites. With beauty, eclectic personality, and irresistible charm, it has been referred to as the ‘jewel of the Pacific’ for the history, art, science, beauty and architecture.

As it’s name suggests, the city of Valparaiso is considered a paradise by many. Despite being a seemingly old and poor city at first glance, there is an underlying richness and modernity to this town. Artists, architects, musicians, and poets have fallen in love with this town...including Graffiti artists.

Valparaiso is a Graffiti mecca. Street artists own the streets just as much as residents do; home owners lend their walls to local and international graffiti artists while tourists take pictures of the art as they walk along the streets of this open air museum.

Artists, such as Inti Castro or Charquipunk, are known as recognized artists and visitors roam the streets looking for a piece of art belonging to them. The geography of Valparaiso comes into play in the graffiti world as well as it offers diagonal walls, endless stairs, and labyrinths of narrow streets.

I came across something that caught my eye this morning when I read Lucha libre masks were hitting the runway in Paris. In chic, white leather of course...

The masks were part of a French menswear fashion show for a Spring-Summer 2011 collection featuring retro, futuristic and kinky selection of skorts, and jumpsuits.

DIY Project: Vinyl Record Bookends

I was searching online looking for creative bookends and came upon recycled vinyl records. I found this how-to tutorial and thought I'd share it w/ you!

I'm gonna try making some this weekend:)

Supplies:
-Flat rectangular cake pan (wide enough to hold the width of the vinyl record)
-Boiling water in a kettle or saucepan for easy pouring.
-Flat, sturdy tool (this will vary a bit, but I found the PERFECT tool in a little 8"x8" bamboo cutting board. you want your tool to be wide enough to flatten the bottom of your bookend out and sturdy enough to apply some weight.)

1. Choose a record you don't mind never listening to again- actually you'll need two if you are making a set. For this tutorial I'll be using Sting: Dream of the Blue Turtles. Do not use a Sting album unless you have a duplicate (as I did), or unless it is scratched beyond playing. I just can't condone that kind of irresponsible wastefulness. I love Sting, what.

2. Decide which side of the record label you'd like to display on the outside of your bookend (favorite songs, cool artwork, etc)
3. Set the cake pan on a flat, sturdy surface like the kitchen counter or a dining table, and leave some room to one side to use as a clean work space.
4. Hold the record upright in the cake pan. Make sure the side of the record you want to be on the outside of the bookend is facing away from your tool. *If you are going to hold the record in your left hand while working with a tool in the right hand, the label should be to your left- facing away from the tool. Also, check to make sure the words or picture on the label are at the correct angle- Just because the label you're looking at on the front side of the record is right-side up, doesn't mean that's the case with the label on the other side!

5. While holding the record upright, slowly begin pouring boiling water over the bottom half of the record, filling the pan an inch or so. (Make sure the water is boiling.)

6. The record should begin to soften almost immediately. Gently press the record downward into the pan until the point where you'd like the crease to be- usually just below the label is enough. This way you have plenty underneath for holding books, but your whole label can show on the outside of the bookend.

7. When the bottom (wet side) of the record is very soft and floppy, immediately place it on your counter workspace, still holding the top part upright with the bottom part bent at a right angle on the table. Use your tool like a squeegee to flatten and smooth the bottom of the record and the crease to a good right angle with a flat surface. Work quickly, as the record will begin to harden again as soon as it's out of the boiling water.

8. Once the record has cooled, towel dry it completely and test it out with some books. If the angle or flatness needs correcting, repeat the process.

Behind the line Frolain Hats appears Blanca Viera; a talented design entrepreneur whose continued success will be driven by her innate, raw talent. After studying Visual Arts at the University of Sagrado Corazón in Puerto Rico, she has held positions as art director and stylist for fashion show productions featuring La Perla and renowned Puerto Rican designer Stella Nolasco.

She has since designed and produced garments and accessories for a number of theatrical productions, pop/rock music videos, red carpets for such events like the Latin Grammys and many more, earning recognition that prepared her for the 2004 launch of her own line of hats and headpieces.

Blanca has sold her designs widely and been featured in reputable fashion magazines including infashion PR, Infashion Rep. Dom,.and Cosmopolitan. Her big scale of headpieces and avant garde hats are featured in the 2009 Belgian film Meant to Be directed by Paul Breul.

The first Frolain Collection, comprised of 10 hand-finiched pieces, were presented at a fashion show in December 2008. Expect to show the world her ultra-chic new collection that will be presented in October '09 and this fall she presented a spring-summer 2010 collection.

Her latest obsession is TURBANS...perfecto for summer no (something like Carmen Miranda. Just fab!)?? Just take a look at some more of her designs below...

In keeping with No Longer Empty’s curatorial practice of site specificity, this exhibition explores the interactions between this particular space and its surrounding physical and cultural contexts. "Weaving" appears in the title as a metaphor for the interconnected artistic actions, and the intertwining of people, projects and ideas here.

Buzzing for Persephone's Bees Highline Ballroom Show Thurs, June 17th!

Persephone's Bees is an Oakland-based rock/pop group who caught my ears back in 2006 w/ the songs "Nice Day" and "City of Love".

I fell in love w/ their look and sound, but to this day haven't had a chance to see them live! On Thurs, June 17th they are performing at Highline Ballroom and I can't wait!

Something else about this band that gets my heart thumping is that the singer; Angelina Moysov also sings in Russian (she grew up in Pyatigorsk, Russia and immigrated to America in 1993) - "Muzika Dlya Fil'ma", "Little Boxes", and "Nostalgia".

Some songs have gained popularity through TV shows and commercials; "City Of Love" was in the film Bewitched, "Nice Day" is used in a Hilton Hotels TV commercial for the Hilton Hotels and the Nancy Drew movie, and Angelina's vocal was used in the opening titles soundtrack of the Showtime show Weeds.

Watch the two music videos below and you'll notice that they both go hand in hand to form a short story. loves it!

I love Pee-Wee Herman so much I wanna marry him!! Not really, but I really, really, really love him and his show. I grew up watching the TV show and all the movies (over and over and over).

I am happy to admit I dressed up as Pee-Wee for Halloween in middle school (Barbie princess wasn't my steeze), I own a life size Pee-Wee cardboard cut-out, and will proudly dance to The Champs song "Tequila" in platform shoes!

Sylvia Ji is a master of capturing the dark side of the beautiful and the sublime. Macabre ‘Day Of The Dead’ catrinas intermingle with exotic empresses, with a regal elegance. Ji’s imagery is a visual elixir of life and death, combining sacred symbolism with mystical glamour and opulence. Influenced by historical costumery, Ji incorporates Baroque detailing such as luxurious tapestries, ornamental feathers, and gold leafing into her work for a more elaborate and decorative effect.

Ji’s work encapsulates an alluring beauty that is both cutting edge and a nod to time-honored technique. Her paintings are symbolic reflections of herself, portraits of people she knows or nameless faces set in a landscape of fleeting and decaying beauty. Possessing an artistic voice as unique as the times we live in, Ji is at once contemplative, spiritual, enigmatic, and yet whimsically funny. This Indie pop/rock band from Caracas, Venezuela were a great addition to my Paz & Amor DJ mix.

Telegrama were introduced to me a couple of years ago by a friend from Venezuela and I have yet to see them live but this video is something to be shared! Check out their new single "Prisionero" below. Enjoy!

ISA GT came from Medellin, Colombia and has been living in London for the last few years, djing making music, radio shows, putting on parties and being involved in a lot of different audiovisual projects and in other disciplines being part of the art collective !WOWOW! and all girl crew *GIRLCORE*

I was first introduced to this talented chica through my lovely friend Carmelita when she was looking to get a gig at Nacotheque. She came through and crashed a great set and the crowd loved it!

Chavita hard-on for Silvia Superstar's "Less Love" (Killer Barbies)!

I was personally introduced to Silvia Superstar back in 2004 via Alaska at a Rock n' Roll party in Madrid (please note that at the time I had NO IDEA who either person was yet!! All I said to Alaska was "Hola, me gusta tu pelo", jajaja). Alaska introduced her as the singer for the Spanish punk band The Killer Barbies who recently toured w/ Lunachicks. She was super hot, very friendly, and definitely in love w/ New York City.

I hadn't heard about Killer Barbies nor Silvia Superstar for years until this evening when I was scrolling through a new party coming to NY called NASTY MONDAYS (originally from Barcelona. Check out their NYC parties on Sat, April 3rd in NY or Mon, April 5th in NY) where they posted a music video for the song "LESS LOVE" and well, I got a Rock n' Roll hard-on!

Silvia Superstar is foxy, Rock n' Roll, Spanish, and a sexy accent when she sings in English...Watch the video for yourself. DOWNLOAD THE SONG "Less Love" here for FREE!
